Harvey Norman looks to new GM to pick up the slack

After the unexpected announcement that Harvey Norman general manager computers and communications, Tony Gattari, is resigning from the top job, a new name has emerged.

John Slack-Smith, former proprietor of Harvey Norman's Balgowlah superstore, has been summoned to take control of the retailing chain's computer section as of August 1 1999.

Slack-Smith comes highly recommended according to Gattari, who said he was "the natural choice," for the position.

"We wanted a proprietor for the job because the role requires an intimate understanding of the company structure, strong relationships with suppliers and good human resource management skills," said Gattari.

"John possesses all those skills and more. He has a completely different management style than myself and is passionate about the organisation."

Joining in 1991, Slack-Smith is in his eighth year at Harvey Norman. Since then the 30 year-old has worked his way up through the ranks with the Chatswood and Balgowlah superstore caps to his credit.
