Ingram takes on Microsoft

Electronic Resources Australia could hardly call itself a one-stop shop without the support of Microsoft so it came as no surprise when the pair announced a new distribution agreement last week.

ERA will now distribute the full range of Microsoft products. The Ingram-owned distributor had previously been supplying Microsoft OEM products and had earned its stripes, said Geoff Wright, director of Microsoft's customer organisation unit.

Global might

Both Wright and Greg Spierkel, Ingram's president for the Asia-Pacific region, denied suggestions that the deal was simply a result of Ingram leveraging its global might. Ingram Micro is Microsoft's largest customer.

"This is a result of the good work from the local team," Spierkel claimed.

ERA will be looking to initially extend its Microsoft sales by leveraging its acquisition of ITG and pushing into the systems arena. Retail will not be an immediate priority, Spierkel added.

"That's not a space we're going to move into immediately, but it is a natural progression," he said.
