3Com promotion ends on a high

Information access and network solutions provider 3Com concluded the $100,000 car give-away reseller promotion of its 56K V.90 Voice Faxmodem by handing the four-wheeled prize to Julie Oliver of Microarts Computers in Adelaide.

"The promotion was designed to achieve increased visibility for our 56K Faxmodem. Resellers were its direct targets and benefactors," said Pieter Vandershaar, 3Com's business development manager, with other 3Com officials explaining the significant role that third-party resellers have in influencing final buying decisions.

Although the success of the promotion is difficult to evaluate in quantitative terms, Vandershaar attributes 3Com's 56K Faxmodem approximate 20 per cent market share, at least in part, to the seven-week promotion, listing Hayes' recent misfortunes as another possible contributing factor.

"The resellers were practically chasing the 56K kit," claimed Vandershaar, adding that "the key to the success of the promotion among resellers was probably that there were very good odds of winning the car."

He further commented that "judging from the overwhelming response to the promotion, [3Com's] aim to reinforce the company's local modem education program, while stimulating the interest of resellers to reach its aggressive modem market share goal, is right on track."
