Via completes Cyrix purchase

Via Technologies announced on Monday that it has completed the takeover of the PC microprocessor assets of National Semiconductor's Cyrix subsidiary.

An undisclosed part of the previously agreed $US167 million sales price was paid at closing, with the remainder to be contingent on future revenues of the Cyrix product lines, the Taiwan-based chip vendor said in a statement.

The deal gives Via all assets pertaining to the MII line of x86-compatible processors and successor products previously owned by National Semiconductor, and makes it the only Taiwan-based company to compete head-to-head with chip giant Intel in the market for PC processors.

In addition to the Cyrix deal, Via last month also announced plans to purchase the x86 processor business of Californian-based IDT.
