Alcatel launches voice/data solution

Releasing its latest-generation medium-to-large enterprise communications solution, networking developer Alcatel has unveiled the 4400 IP - Private Communications Exchange (PCX), for integrated voice/data networks.

A company spokesperson for Alcatel claims the combination of its strength in the call centre market and the dominance of recently acquired Xylan in LAN switching enables Alcatel to offer enterprises a fully unified voice and data networking solution.

One network

"As voice communication is enabled over the data network, there is now only one network and one management system for the IT/IS manager to control," said Olivier Baujard, president of Alcatel's enterprise solutions division. According to an Alcatel statement, this equates to reduced ownership and administration costs for customers.

With a clear migration path for existing 4400 PBX customers to upgrade to the 4400 IP-PCX, Alcatel claims the solution provides transparency across three areas of an enterprise, comprising infrastructure, workplace and applications. This is enabled via full packet voice networking, claims Alcatel, where voice services are compressed and sent across the IP network, further reducing bandwidth.
