What's new from ... Xircom, Palm, Hewlett-Packard, Compaq


Xircom has released its new credit-card sized handheld product called the Xircom Rex Pro 5.

Users are able to enter and store up to 2MB worth of information such as schedules, address lists, memos and even Web content which can then be synchronised with a PC for downloading either through direct connection or via the infrared facility.

The Pro 5 offers up to six months battery life and offers users quick and easy access to Web content in addition to compatibility with popular applications such as Act!, Organizer, Outlook, Sidekick and Schedule+, Yahoo calendar and Excite planner.

The Pro 5 comes in two models, standard and with docking station, priced at $349 and $399 respectively.

Adding to its now vast array of handheld devices, Palm has just released a product the company is aiming at "hyper" busy business professionals who need basic management capabilities at an affordable price.

The Palm m100 comes with some basic features such as a notepad, enabling users to jot down quick notes on the screen and a clock placed for immediate time recognition.

The unit comes with 2MB of memory and one USB port to support users looking to use cool functions such as Web page and computer game downloading.

PC users need only a 486 or faster with at least Windows 95 and 64MB RAM, while a Power PC or faster also with 64MB RAM is required for Mac users.

The m100 comes with HotSync cable, two AAA alkaline batteries, CD-ROM, Palm Desktop software, link to Microsoft Outlook, AvantGo software, a Getting Started Guide and a stylus. The m100 is priced at $329.

The Jornada 720 is the successor to HP's popular 690 handheld product and comes with a number of new features directed at the high-end business user.

The HP Jornada 720 Handheld PC combines the portable form factor, rich-colour 1/2 VGA display, and comfortable keyboard of the 690 with a 206MHz StrongARM processor, a 51MHz memory data bus, and 2D graphics acceleration designed to provide high-speed access to data.

The 720 runs the new Microsoft Windows for Handheld PC 2000 software, which comes with pocket versions of Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. In addition, Microsoft Windows Media Player and a stereo audio jack are included for listening to electronic music files in stereo.

The unit also comes with a 56Kbps modem and new Microsoft Internet Explorer for H/PC Version 4.01.

The 720 also ships with a smart card reader as well as separate slots for PC Card and CompactFlash.

Battery life is much longer than the average attention span at about nine hours. Fresh on the local market HP is yet to set the price for the 720 but it won't be cheap. Its recommended price in the US is $999.

Available from Compaq Computer is the iPAQ iPocket PC designed for the business professional.

The iPocket comes with the full range of standard organiser-type features but comes into its own through the addition of the Expansion Pack System. This enables users to add functionality such as PC Card or Compact Flash connections.

The PC Card Expansion Pack enables users to connect to e-mail, the Internet and corporate networks wirelessly, with a GSM card or an IEEE 802.11b HR wireless LAN PC card. In addition, the CompactFlash Expansion Pack provides users with the ability to plug in a variety of cards, such as storage, local area network connectivity and other third-party options like a modem or barcode scanner (available from other manufacturers).

Expansion Packs currently under development include a Global Positioning System (GPS) to transform the iPAQ Pocket PC into a navigator, a voice and data pack with GSM or GPRS cellular technologies as well as a combination Bluetooth/CompactFlash Expansion Pack for simultaneous multi-device connectivity and storage expansion.

Pricing for the iPAQ Pocket PC series starts at $1245 including GST and is available immediately through selected channels.
