New monthly top 20 Web sites

Australia's leading Web sites are to be recognised on a monthly basis with a top 20 list to be published by an Internet popularity ratings guide, Top 100, which tracks the surfing habits of more than 180,000 Net-connected Aussies.

Each month, the 20 most popular Web sites with Australian Internet users will be published and circulated by Top 100 which has been developed over eight months by Internet marketing consultancy Sinewave Interactive.

It uses data gathered from the proxy server log files of Australia's leading Internet service providers (ISPs) to track which Web sites are the most popular with locals.

"The Internet has the potential to be the most accountable medium ever, yet little has been done to quantify things at this stage," said Adrian Giles, joint managing director, Sinewave. "Significant additional data is being assessed at present and we are continuing to seek the cooperation of many more ISPs across the country for the provision of additional data."

"We anticipate being able to present some ground-breaking research over the next few months," said Andrew Barlow, Sinewave's other joint managing director. "With this depth of aggregated data, it's possible to study usage patterns on a level which has never before been attempted.

"When we quote traffic levels, our indications are based on what we can see, which is the range of nine ISPs across four states."

According to Top100, the 20 most popular Web sites with Australians in the period January to March 1999 are as follows:
