Handheld distributor spreads into services

Mobile computing distributor Advanced Portable Technologies is set to expand its horizons next month with the development of a technical support and services arm.

The Technical Support and Services Department was developed to address and capitalise on the lack of service and support available for the burgeoning handheld computing market, particularly in Windows CE, said Felix Wong, technical director of Advanced Portable Technologies.

"As the acknowledged Australian leader in the distribution of portable computing solutions, it was logical to initiate a major upgrade of the Technical Support and Services area," he said.

The new business unit will concentrate on offering a range of post-sale add-on services including on-site support packs that will be sold through resellers, said Wong. The distributor also offers an in-house service of software pre-configuring and compatibility testing which is charged on a per-job basis and sold through resellers.

The announcement follows Advanced Portable Technologies' recent appointment to distribute Palm products. Wong said that although the company had always offered technical support it now has the "complete menagerie" of handheld computing products and the expertise to support the rollout of complete mobile computing solutions.

Wong said the company is positioning itself as the dominant force in the mobile computing market in readiness for the market to "take off". He projects the services division will account for 10-15 per cent of the distributor's annual revenue over the next 12 to 18 months.
