Vertical customers get taste of cut-down ERP

Two major application vendors, SAP and PeopleSoft, are now touting faster, cheaper, more effective ways to get up and running.

SAP announced the availability of its Accelerated Automotive package of pre-configured software and implementation services late last month. It is the latest in a series of SAP Accelerated packages for small-to-medium customers in specific industries.

Additionally, PeopleSoft last week launched PeopleSoft Advantage, a combination of online and in-person services intended to aid customers with implementation and provide a quicker payoff.

A key component is the Advantage ToolKit, a Web-enabled type of "Cliff Notes" of best practices, which offers advice, templates, samples, and extra information, according to Steve Peck, vice president of strategic programs. The toolkit also includes software tools to handle workflow, object migration, and documentation creation, he added.

PeopleSoft is also beefing up its consulting and support services with a special cadre of "advisors" who have industry experience and pre-packaged menus of services.

Both vendors are responding to an increasing demand from customers for quicker, cheaper implementations, according to Byron Miller, an analyst at the Giga Information Group.

The midsize and small customers that ERP vendors are targeting are eager for quick payback because they cannot afford to take the long view and shut down their systems for a year or two while they install an ERP suite, Miller said.
