The IT channel was well represented in this year's Business Review Weekly (BRW) top 100 list of the fastest growing private companies, with five of the top 20 groups either resellers or distributors.
To qualify, businesses needed to be independently owned and show a turnover of more than $250,000 over a five-year growth period beginning in 1993.
Last week ARN profiled Melbourne-based Multimedia Technology, which came in second. Meanwhile another distributor, Advanced Portable Technologies (APT), found its place on the list at number 12, achieving a 955 per cent increase in turnover for the period.
According to APT director Felix Wong: "We have always tried to do the homework before we sell the product."
One of the big movers on this year's list was South Australian reseller Specialist Computer Supplies (SCS), which jumped from 85th last year to 44th this year on the back of outstanding sales of computer consumables.
SCS is a direct sales operation focused on corporate and government markets. The company attributed this growth rate to the acquisition of a Sydney branch office and warehouse, plus the conversion of its agency in Brisbane.
Greg Barraclough, SCS's national sales and marketing manager, said approximately 90 per cent of business has been generated through telemarketing. SCS simply works the database well, and focuses on customer service.
