University Chooses Interwoven ECM Strategy to Support Distance Learning Expansion Plan

Sydney, Australia, September 14, 2004 - Interwoven today announced that Deakin University has selected TeamSite 6.0, a proven content management solution, to underpin its distance learning expansion plan across the whole University. Deakin University is one of Australia’s largest distance education providers with over 14,000 students studying externally and over 4,000 international students studying its courses in Australia and across the world.

“Deakin University has as a core commitment to life-long learning and determined that an enterprise content management system would provide the required platform and processes in order to empower both the online learning material and its delivery mechanism,” commented Professor John Rosenberg, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) for Deakin University.

With multiple areas of the University involved in creating, producing and manufacturing potential courseware in print, multimedia or online formats and with no centralised repository for digital learning objects in place, the key challenge faced by Deakin was that material was located on various servers across the University. This resulted in duplication of effort and ineffective management of the online learning material and made finding and accessing information a time-consuming, often fruitless exercise. Additionally, regulatory issues such as copyright compliance, were extremely difficult to monitor.

Following the RFI issued 18 months ago to approximately 15 companies, Deakin selected Interwoven TeamSite 6.0 along with OpenDeploy, Interwoven’s powerful distribution tool, and Metatagger, its metadata management product. TeamSite will be the central repository of learning objects.

“We are a geographically dispersed organisation and one of the key reasons we chose Interwoven for our ECM platform was for its scaleable, open architecture and its foundation on open standards,” explained Rosenberg. Since the University wanted to enable every academic involved in the creation of content - 60 percent of whom are individual academic staff and faculty- employed educational developers - ease of use was critical. “In order for us to achieve true return, it was highly important that the system would be universally accepted by all content creators.”

Capability for the easy development and revision of process workflows was also a requirement as well as a solution that would allow for back-end integration. It was vital that the system would integrate well with the University’s existing systems and in particular, with its online learning management system, WebCT Vista, which the majority of universities use in Australia.

After a 30-day proof of capability trial in April which was a resounding success, the University committed to licensing the whole of the University and purchased thousands of seats of TeamSite. Deployment is now in progress and intensive training for the project team commences in early August. Following the training, the team will begin the implementation of Phase One of the project, expected to be complete in June 2005.

“All staff are very excited about the implementation of the Interwoven ECM platform and the prospect of assisting Deakin staff in a range of current and future activities. The underlying aim is to make the process of developing study material more efficient and effective whilst providing a higher quality product for the students,” commented Ms Helen Livingston, Acting Executive Director of Learning Services for the University.

“Interwoven continues to be the solution of choice for leaders in the education sector, such as Deakin University,” commented Richard Collins, managing director for Interwoven. “Customers like Deakin are seeing the value of partnering with Interwoven as their single vendor to empower and integrate their dispersed organisations with our enterprise content management platform.”

Other Universities that have embraced TeamSite include the University of Newcastle, Monash University, the University of Sydney, the University of NSW and the Australian National University.
