Having pulled up sticks in New Zealand Alex Davidson, former managing director of Auckland-based distributor Ferntech, has made the move back across the Tasman to try his luck in a new venture.
Backed by IntreSource, a Singapore manufacturer of multimedia products, he is setting up the Australian operation in the function of both manufacturer's representative and distributor.
IntreSource Australia opened for business last month in Sydney. Its multimedia offerings include the TeraSound PCI sound cards, Alaris Quickvideo products, the Intrescan desktop scanner and the soon to be released TeraMovie DVD NT decoder card.
"Multimedia is the future of the market as far as we are concerned," Davidson said. "There's growth in multimedia, and there will be more growth as video applications like conferencing become more widespread," he added.
It would appear that the growing multimedia market was not happening fast enough in New Zealand for Davidson, and the move to Australia is based on his belief that there is "more opportunity and more money floating around the larger Australian business scene".
He told ARN that he wanted IntreSource to be positioned as a supplier of multimedia and communications products for the consumer rather than corporate market, so its target customers will be retailers and assemblers of consumer PCs.
