Intel Australia last week unveiled its certification program for the channel. In partnership with IT training and consulting company Technology Solutions, the first course starts at the University of Wollongong Sydney Centre on June 15, and at Melbourne's RMIT Carlton campus on June 22.
Although it is part of Intel's worldwide channel program that commenced in the US in March, the Australian courses have been adapted to suit the local market and Australian technology needs. Part of the curriculum that was designed in Australia has been adopted by other countries where the program is being introduced.
According to Archie Wilson, Intel Australia's national sales manager, the design of the program caters for the technical training needs of system engineers as well as platform and network integrators. Participants can take either or both the specialist integration stream (Intel Certified Integration Specialist) or a consultant's stream (Intel Certified Solutions Consultant), both of which require previous industry experience or a relevant IT qualification.
Technology Solutions director Ann Moffatt said that it is a more demanding qualification than some other vendor based courses with which she had been involved. At a cost of $495 per day (and Moffatt estimates the cost of certification to be from $6000 per engineer) it is reasonable to assume that participants, whether sponsored by their employer or attending under their own steam, will be committed to an IT channel service providing career path.
While CCIE has been around since 1993, there are now other intermediate certifications now available, according to the needs of the engineer or consultant.
Wilson explained that the channel certification program is intended to provide a substantial qualification, and individual certification will be valid for 12 months. "Our requirement for Intel Authorised Service Providers (IASP) is that they must have at least 2 Intel Certified Engineers on staff," he said.
Wilson expects that the most of the early places will be taken by the bigger GIDs (genuine Intel dealers), but stressed they will endeavour to provide places according to the balanced needs of its channel.
