<p>MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – September 16, 2004 – VERITAS Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS) today celebrated its 15-year anniversary and reflected on its rich history of innovation by recognizing key innovators, their accomplishments and how they’re thinking about the future and enabling utility computing. Key to the company’s proven track record of innovation are its contributions to developing the industry’s first robust volume manager and file system, delivering industry leading back-up and data protection software and protecting customers from disaster with high availability software. The common thread woven throughout the company’s history is an uncanny ability to put the problems of customers first before developing and delivering software solutions to keep today’s data centers up and running. With a reputation for delivering innovative software and engineering excellence VERITAS is well positioned to move customers toward the next paradigm in computing, utility computing.</p>

<p>Humble Beginnings
VERITAS Software Corporation emerged from Tolerant Software, Inc. in 1989, which emerged from Tolerant Transaction Systems, Inc., a fault tolerant computing systems company first established in 1982. In 1988 pioneer and co-founder Dale Shipley formed a small software organization called Tolerant Software to pursue engineering excellence in developing software intended to ensure the availability of computing systems and the mission critical applications that run across them. From its modest beginnings and tiny staff of talented engineers the company quickly developed an aptitude for listening to customers and responding with innovative software-based solutions to their problems. <p>“From the beginning in 1989 when we formed VERITAS Software the cornerstone of our success centered upon convincing and securing the support of AT&amp;T UNIX System Laboratories, Inc. to trust us to extract the valuable code from the Tolerant Systems high availability operating system and develop and deliver the industry’s first robust UNIX System V transaction-based volume manager and file system thereby contributing the early success of AT&amp;T and Sun Microsystems in the promising UNIX marketplace,” said Dale Shipley, VERITAS co-founder. “It was this calculated risk that opened the door to the broad horizontal adoption of VERITAS software by the myriad UNIX systems vendors and paved the path toward the company’s leadership in storage management and data protection. The company’s initial value proposition still holds true today, a company’s most valuable IT assets are not the hardware systems, but rather the data that resides on and runs across them and the protection and availability of that data is paramount.”</p>
<p>Quality, Risk and Persistence: Volume Manager and File System Emerge
From the beginning, the engineers were thinking about innovative ways to dramatically improve the availability of computing operating systems first through solving simple problems and then by taking on more complex approaches. In 1989 if an IT manager wanted to make changes to the file system of their UNIX computing environment it meant bringing the system down to make changes and then bringing it back up with the hope that the changes would not disrupt availability further. The fledging company’s strategy initially centered on three key priorities: first, eliminate system downtime, second simplify overly complex tasks and develop a graphical user interface (GUI) to visualize storage management and administrative tasks and third adopt a maniacal focus toward enhancing the performance of systems. The company had a steep hill to climb in convincing dozens of leading computing system vendors that VERITAS could build, deliver and support a higher quality file system than they could themselves at a lower cost and with greater performance capabilities. At the time customers were stuck with the file system that shipped with their system vendor’s operating system and that meant lots of time invested in managing and administering disparate computing systems. VERITAS took a calculated risk that customers would respond favorably to systems that could be managed, changed and administered without disruption. The risk paid off handsomely with the emergence of VERITAS Volume Manager in 1990 and VERITAS File System in 1991, two of the company’s flagship products that can be found at the heart of nearly 70 percent of the world’s data centers today.</p>
<p>“One of the things that distinguishes VERITAS with customers is that we take a business approach to innovation versus an engineering approach,” said John Colgrove, VERITAS Fellow and 15-year veteran, VERITAS. “If you listen to customer’s problems and what they’re trying to do and you listen to their goals you get ideas for how you can go and create solutions to solve them. <p>Data Protection Mastered

<p>A Pioneer in Disaster Recovery
VERITAS has long been a pioneer in developing and delivering innovative clustering and disaster recovery software. From the time that VERITAS acquired Tidal Wave and its first high availability product First Watch in 1995, a rudimentary two node single application failover SCSI-based solution, its lead engineers were already thinking about developing advanced clustering solutions that could scale to 8, 16 or 32 nodes and ensure the availability of multiple applications running across Storage Area Networks (SANs) with wide area network failover and disaster recovery. In 1998 VERITAS delivered its first release of VERITAS Cluster Server bringing advanced clustering capabilities to every major operating system from Sun Solaris to Microsoft Windows to Red Hat Linux along with integration with VERITAS Cluster File System and VERITAS Cluster Volume Manager to ensure the availability and manageability of dozens of applications running across increasingly sophisticated and scaleable IT environments.</p>
<p>“When it comes to your disaster recovery plan, you only get one chance to get it right because you can’t ask a hurricane or an earthquake or a power outage to come back tomorrow,” said Jason Bloomstein, staff software engineer and seven year veteran, VERITAS. “If your plan doesn’t work, all of the IT infrastructure that you’ve invested in and deployed goes to waste, but if you have the ability to test disaster recovery scenarios on a day-to-day basis without bringing your production environment down then suddenly you can maximize those IT investments and get a good return on those investments for your company.”</p>
<p>The Journey to Utility Computing Commences
As customers make the trek toward utility computing VERITAS is innovating constantly to bring increasingly sophisticated software to market. The latest offerings enable IT managers to shift from reactive problem resolution to proactive availability and failover testing to address problems with storage, servers and applications before they impact the business. By combining VERITAS Cluster Server with VERITAS i3™, VERITAS OpForce™ and VERITAS UpScale™ software (scheduled for release in 2005), IT managers will quickly realize the tremendous cost savings and return on investment of automating their IT infrastructure. In an automated environment, if an application’s performance deteriorates to an unacceptable level VERITAS i3 software is designed to alert IT managers before the problem impacts end-users and provide insight into how to best solve the problem. If the problem stems from insufficient processing power, VERITAS OpForce software can automatically provision additional servers and in 2005 VERITAS UpScale software, an acquired Ejasent technology, can migrate the applications along to the new cluster in their current state ensuring that end-users remain highly productive. Add to that the VERITAS Cluster File System and VERITAS Cluster Volume Manager along with the bullet-proof reliability of VERITAS NetBackup software and IT managers are well on their way toward aligning IT tightly with the changing needs of the business and realizing the promise of utility computing.</p>
