The ongoing struggle for dominance in the branded monitor market continues to play out, with Samsung reclaiming the crown from last quarter's market leader, LG.
The vendor emerged with a 1.5 per cent lead and a win that IDC PC and hardware market analyst, Michael Sager, described at sweet.
Figures show Samsung had a 17.5 per cent overall market share compared with LG's 16 per cent.
"In the last four quarters it has been 50/50 between the two vendors, but Samsung has grown some of their channel business and also won particular tenders which really helped their growth this quarter," he said.
Phillips (13.7 per cent) came third and BenQ (11.5 per cent) was fourth.
Acer (11 per cent) jumped from seventh place in Q1 2004 to fifth place in Q2 while Mitsubishi dropped out of the top five vendors to seventh. "Acer had a particularly large tender win last quarter and Mitsubishi has really been affected by the LCD shortage," Sager said. "Acer's new kiosks have also grown market awareness and they have been focusing more on their retail business and channel."
Overall monitor sales were also dynamic with Q2 2004 hitting a 12.8 per cent growth rate - a figure almost double that of Q2 2003.
"The sheer number of PCs sold this quarter was the highest ever," Sager said. "There were also a few large-scale tenders across government, finance and banking which helped drive that figure, including one for the Department of Defence for 20,000 monitors."
Continued overall LCD shortages had resulted in stabilised prices for 15-inch monitors, Sager said. Although the shortage also affected 17-inch screens, the form factor was rapidly becoming the new entry-level LCD of choice.
"In Q2 2004, 17-inch monitors were 55.1 per cent of LCD sales compared with 51.5 per cent in Q1 2004," he said. "The shortage of 17-inch models will not be as bad as for 15-inch models, as vendor forecasting has improved. They have also been trying to deliberately shift the market to 17-inch models."
Prices for the larger 19- and 21-inch monitors were also falling as a result of vendors such as HP and Apple producing products of this size, he said.
Over the remaining year, the market would experience mixed growth, Sager said.
"Q4 will be helped with the release of the forthcoming Media Centre OS from Microsoft, but in Q3 certain segments of the market will really slow down with the forthcoming federal election," he said. "Canberra business is decreasing and areas directly dependent on government spending are putting purchases on a temporary hold for six to eight weeks."
