Lucent to roll out Macquarie's data network

Network specialists Lucent Technologies have signed a heads of agreement deal with Australian carrier Macquarie Corporate Telecommunications to supply a data network reputed to be worth several million dollars.

The successful candidate out of six applicants, Lucent was ultimately selected because of its technical solutions.

"We were particularly impressed with the ATM switch's ability to efficiently handle a broad range of data networks and new IP-based services," said Aidan Tudehope, chief operating officer at Macquarie. Bell Labs, Lucent's research and development facility, was also instrumental in winning it the Macquarie business, according to Tudehope.

Lucent's managing director Phil Pryke hopes to see this deal consolidate the American-based company's position in the corporate market and "reinforces Lucent's presence in the Australian market. " This has been further enhanced by our September acquisition of Australian company JNA Technologies," claims Pryke.

The national network will include Lucent's recently developed ATM and switching technology and will be rolled out in stages in the third quarter of this year, starting with Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
