IBM is following the trend of direct vendor sales with the announcement in the US last week that it intends to sell its entire personal computer range over the Internet.
A US report suggests that the initiative, code named Project Odyssey, is directed towards small and medium businesses and aims to sell IBM's complete PC product list online.
Although confirming the report IBM Australia's general manager of personal systems group, Phil Bullock, is adamant that IBM is maintaining its current distribution arrangement in Australia. "We will only use the Internet as a tool to generate leads to our channel partners," he assures those nervous about the continuing trend of vendor direct strategies.
Bullock justifies Australia's independence from its American parent with the suggestion that "Australia and the United States are completely different markets."
