Sniffer Technologies introduces new network application performance management tool and support for large-scale enterprises

 • 18 May, 2004 14:59

Sydney, 18 May 2004 – Network Associates, the leading provider of intrusion prevention solutions, today announced the launch of its Appera Application Manager 1.0 software solution. Through the introduction of Appera software, Sniffer Technologies now provides both network and applications managers with the ability to help manage the application lifecycle from pre-applications deployment testing all the way through to post-application deployment troubleshooting.

This announcement provides customers with the necessary tools to help improve the availability, performance, and efficiency of their applications, as well as the underlying network infrastructure. It enables them to reduce the business risks related to the deployment and maintenance of key applications such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Business Process Automation (BPA).

The Appera Application Manager 1.0 software solution operates as a software application blade to Sniffer Distributed 4.5, also announced today, and leverages the same instrumentation that network managers have relied on for 18 years, while delivering additional intelligence that provides in-depth analysis of application performance. Key components of Appera Application Manger include:
• Application discovery – Appera software is able to automatically discover and provide visibility to out-of-the-box to key applications such as SAP R3, Oracle, and PeopleSoft by looking at application flows to classify packets and measure statistics. Through its customer-aided discovery, Appera software can also be configured to recognise many other applications, such as in-house created custom applications
• Hyper-locking – provides the ability to lock, or drill-down, on application, client, server, VLAN, and time dimensions in order to increase availability and performance and reduce mean-time-to-resolution. This allows IT staff to focus on a single event to gain insight into a specific problem and whether it is network or application based to bring the appropriate resolution, and then proceed to viewing a different activity or event.
• Time interval separation – Appera Application Manager 1.0 enables IT staff to see problems evolve over time intervals. The intervals can be broken down in five or fifteen minute increments with a two-hour historical view. The Appera solution’s highly granular views help to further decrease mean-time-to-resolution in order to maximise the availability and performance of business-critical applications.

Appera Application Manager also helps IT staff to more efficiently operate their networks and applications to reduce or defer capital expenditures. Additionally, Appera Application Manager provides insight into bandwidth consumed by non-business applications and offers statistics that help gauge application efficiency and chattiness and maintain VLAN integrity.

Through the introduction of Appera software, Sniffer Technologies leverages its 18-year legacy in network performance management to become the leader in network-based application performance management. The following solutions complement the Appera Application Manager to provide network and application managers with solutions that address their business and technology needs.

The company is also introducing:
nPO Visualizer 2.5. The nPO Visualizer product from Sniffer Technologies enables IT personnel to produce both short and long-term reports on bandwidth utilisation, predominant protocols and applications, users and servers that are consuming the most bandwidth, and application response times. nPO Visualizer 2.5 adds trending of Appera Application Manager data and improved security and performance to improve its ability to report on the industry’s widest breadth of instrumentation, from the core of the network out to the edge.

Sniffer Voice 2.5. Sniffer Voice provides network managers with tools and insights needed to facilitate successful VoIP rollouts, and enhances overall quality of service. It plays an important role in optimising the management of converged voice, video, and data networks. With today’s announcement, Sniffer Voice 2.5 offers enhanced filtering by audio and video payloads; updated protocol decodes to the newest specifications, including H.323v4, H.225v4, H245v8, H.261, H.263, RTSP, Faststart and RASv4; and enhanced VoIP alarms.

Multi-trace traffic analysis. The nPO Manager 3.0 technology, also announced today, contains multi-trace analysis which provides network managers with the ability to analyse multi-segment flows from Sniffer Distributed data captures, allowing for rapid problem detection and resolution through its ability to identify whether problems reside with the client, the server or application, or the network. New features of the nPO Manager multi-trace functionality include the ability to automatically isolate problems in multi-tier Web application environments, the common deployment of many strategic applications such as CRM and ERP; on-demand decode of secure socket layer (SSL) encrypted traffic to troubleshoot encrypted Web traffic; and a comparative analysis tool that documents effects of changes to the network infrastructure, showing the network and application performance and utilisation before, during, and after application deployments.

The products announced today will be available through direct sales and channel partners, and will begin shipping in June 2004. For additional information on Appera Application Manager please contact Sniffer Technologies at +61 2 9761 4200.
