Educom buyout means shift to integration mode

International document management integrator the MDY Group has acquired local Australian-based company Educom Business Solutions, signalling a new direction for the software reseller into systems integration.

Under the agreement, Educom's existing infrastructure will remain in place, with MDY staff operating out of Educom's offices in Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane, said Educom managing director Colin Metz. The new company will be a wholly owned subsidiary of MDY called Educom Business Solutions MDY.

Metz said that "numerous offers" have been made in the past for the Australian knowledge management specialist but it has been the recent convergence of a number of factors, such as PC DOCS establishing a presence in the Australian market, which compelled Educom to go with MDY.

"We didn't want to be a competitor with our training clients," said Metz. "To remain a successful reseller, we had to skill up on systems integration."

Largely a software-based reseller, Metz said Educom stands to gain from this shift in business focus, a wider range of products and MDY's experience in LAN/WAN integration.

"Seventy per cent of MDY's business is services. They've solved problems our clients are only just coming up against," said Metz. "For our staff it's a huge benefit."

In turn, Educom offers MDY a foothold into the Australian marketplace, said Metz.
