IBM follows Toshiba into consumer notebooks

IBM follows Toshiba into consumer notebooks

Hot on the heels of Toshiba's launch of lower-priced and retail-exclusive products targeted at a new class of SOHO consumer notebook buyers (ARN July 7, page 4), IBM has added three new models to the ThinkPad iSeries range.

IBM's ThinkPad iSeries quickly became its best seller at retail outlets after being launched last year. The new models are aimed at further penetrating student, small business and family markets. In addition to retail stores, the products will be available for purchase from IBM's Web site.

With recent GFK Research studies showing a dramatic growth of notebook sales at retail, it is not surprising to see vendors now targeting the market for future growth which analysts are tipping will come in addition to, rather than at the expense of, desktop sales.

While definitely not the highest specification for an IBM notebook, the $3499 recommended entry level for the new Celeron 366-powered iSeries 1440M is the lowest ever for a ThinkPad.
