US companies spent $US10.9 billion on intranets last year -- one out of every four dollars appropriated for Web-related projects, according to International Data Corp (IDC).
The research company said it expects intranet spending to continue to increase as more applications are developed for the internal online information sites. Intranets will evolve "from a medium (displaying) static content to the foundation for managing dynamic business transactions and knowledge," IDC said.
More than half of large US organisations had intranets in place by the end of last year, IDC reported in the "IDC Intranet Fact Book: First Half 1999" report. And, more than 30 million people use some form of intranet.
