HP, Oracle integrating e-commerce software

Hewlett-Packard and Oracle yesterday announced an agreement to jointly develop and market an integrated platform to enable electronic commerce applications for businesses.

HP will integrate its E-speak Internet developer tools with the Oracle8i database and other Oracle Internet platform software in what the companies said will be a comprehensive set of e-commerce applications.

"We believe this is quite the strategic alliance," Ann Livermore, president and chief executive officer of HP's enterprise computing division, said at a news conference.

The companies have already begun integrating the products at an HP laboratory in Cupertino, California, and at Oracle labs in nearby Redwood Shores. Both companies will jointly market the products.

E-speak software will be released to the open-source community by the end of the year, Livermore said. The technology enables developers to create applications in areas such as application hosting, Web-based procurement, ERP (enterprise resource planning), and consumer services like finding travel information and making reservations. Oracle's Internet platform of products includes the 8i database, JServer and Internet directory and security services.

The joint project promises to be an appealing offering to businesses looking to advance Web-based operations, said one analyst.

"Everybody is trying to do something to offer (Web-based products), and different companies offer bits and pieces," said Rob Enderle, an analyst with consulting and research firm Giga Information Group in Santa Clara, California. "But it's obviously important when two large companies get together and agree to provide technology and solutions."

IBM with Net.Commerce, and Baan, with E-Enterprise suite, are among several companies offering applications for e-commerce.
