3Com scores Wilson's services

Well-known channel identity Archie Wilson has landed at 3Com in the newly created position of country manager, Australia and New Zealand.

The former Intel national sales manager will report directly to Gerhard Rumpff, 3Com's Australia and New Zealand managing director.

Wilson is known in the industry as a central figure in the restructuring of Intel's Australian channel over the last two years.

The company reports the addition of Wilson will free Rumpff to concentrate on his new regional responsibilities as director of marketing, Asia-Pacific in addition to the MD role.

3Com said that as country manager, Wilson will assume responsibility for all areas of the company's business when he takes the reins during September.

Specifically, Wilson is charged with developing a specific focus on sales and marketing strategies in the carrier, enterprise, SME and education market segments.

Wilson told ARN he is expecting 3Com to expand its current networking-focused horizons.

"I wouldn't have been happy to move to a traditional networking company," he said.

"There's some exciting stuff coming up in areas such as wireless computing. Palm is evolving as the device for connectivity," Wilson added.

ARN LiveWire reported on Wednesday last week that Wilson left imm-ediately after resigning, although the parting was amicable.

"I have found working in the channel one of the most rewarding things I have done and look forward to con-tinuing this in my new position. I have been happy at Intel, so it had to be a compelling offer for me to move," Wilson said.

According to one of Intel's channel partners, it was advised by Intel general manager David Bolt on Tuesday afternoon that Wilson was no longer with the company, but was assured that it was "business as usual".

Rumpff was not available for comment by ARN's deadline.
