3Com has signed an agreement to acquire data and fax-over-IP software vendor LANSource Technologies.
The acquisition aims to target the worldwide IP fax services market, which IDC figures project will grow from $US80 million this year to $US2 billion by 2002.
It will also give 3Com the technology and expertise to accelerate its development of fully integrated unified messaging solutions for IP telephony, a market which Ovum figures estimate will grow from $US272 million this year to $US5.5 billion in 2002.
The transaction is valued at about $US26 million and is expected to be completed later this month.
3Com Australia and New Zealand managing director Archie Wilson said LANSource had distinguished itself as a top innovator in its field. "They are a strategic acquisition that will enhance 3Com's competitive advantage in the lucrative fax-over-IP market and help us develop a new range of enhanced IP telephony services as part of our CommWorks IP telephony platform."
