Rolling out a fully integrated warehousing system to 39 locations would normally take two to three years at an organisation like US-based medical and surgical supplies company Owens & Minor.

However, the company fast-tracked the project to beat year 2000 deadlines by hand-picking 20 of its brightest and most technically astute warehouse staffers and teaching them to train others on the new system.

Under this program, warehouse employees based in Florida, for example, would work half a month there and spend the other half training staff on the Cambar system in warehouse locations such as San Francisco.

`Our [business] divisions unself-ishly gave up some of their best people to get this project done on time,' noted Craig Smith, Owens & Minor's president and CEO.
