Cisco, S'ware.com to go wireless

Cisco Systems and Internet infrastructure applications provider Software.com have agreed to jointly develop wireless communication services and products for Internet service providers, the two companies announced last week.

The companies are looking to take advantage of the increasing convergence of IP (Internet protocol) networks and wireless networks, Cisco and Software.com said in a joint statement.

The companies plan to develop products that integrate voice, data and information services over a single Internet-based network that can be accessed with wireless equipment. Current Software.com customers include, PSINet, AT&T Canada and Excite, the company said.

Joint training

The agreement also calls for the two companies to jointly offer training to systems integrators on how to integrate and deploy Internet-based wireless systems for ISPs worldwide. The first company to sign up for such training is Telcordia Technologies, Cisco and Software.com said.

Last month, Cisco joined a wireless Net initiative with 10 other companies, including Motorola and Toshiba, in an effort to establish and promote open standards for broadband wireless Internet services.
