Microsoft announces Windows 2000 prices

Microsoft last week released prices for its Windows 2000 family of products for its resellers and large customers, marking yet another attempt to shore up support for the much-hyped suite.

The most noticeable revelation was that prices for Windows 2000 Advanced Server essentially remain the same as for Windows NT Workstation 4.0.

Microsoft claimed the price increases on Windows 2000 Server were justified by the addition of Active Directory, policy based management, Internet Information Server 5.0, Kerberos-based security and Web application services.

Prices for Windows 2000 DataCentre Server will be announced at a later date.

Low-priced upgrades for Windows 95/98 will be available.

Microsoft also claims to have simplified the licensing program for the Windows 2000 server family, moving from the "complex" Client Access License (CAL) arrangements in to an "authenticated user" model.
