Australian-owned data storage specialist, SLI-Consulting, is hunting for partners to sell its high-end concept of a 30-bay storage appliance.
To be manufactured in the UK and shipped with a three-year warranty, the StorageNetwork 3025 will feature a 2U-high Xyratex enclosure that holds 30 2.5-inch Seagate Savvio notebook drives.
Each separate drive is capable of being swapped while the machine is in use to simplify maintenance and repair.
A single 3025 is capable of storing 2.19TB, or the devices can be stacked four-high to provide 8.76TB from 8U of space. SLI-Consulting's principal consultant, Jose Goldmann, said that the storage industry had been using 3.5-inch drives for over a decade and it was time to move ahead.
"I expect that in four or five years, everyone will have moved on," he said. "Seagate's notebook drives last longer and are more reliable than the bigger versions, plus they allow for a much smaller device footprint."
Goldmann said SLI was on the look out for potential partners that could market the product as their own and integrate it into enterprise storage offerings.
Even if there were no takers before January, SLI would go into manufacturing of the array, he said.
SLI has recently been focusing on relationships with smaller storage systems integrators, as well as local whitebox and OEM companies.
The company signed a deal with ASI Solutions last month to supply hardware to the local IT manufacturer and its reseller channel.
