The network interface card market grew slightly in the third quarter of this year, according to market research firm Cahners In-Stat Group.
The market grew by 2.7 per cent, expanding to 13.4 million units. Although the NIC market is mature, new technologies like Gigabit Ethernet and USB Ethernet NICs are driving growth, the firm says.
Cahners In-Stat expects Gigabit Ethernet NICs to be the fastest-growing category next year, as vendors ship more NICs using the new 1000Base-T standard. This standard allows for Gigabit Ethernet over Category-5 copper wires, instead of the more expensive fibre-optic lines.
Meanwhile, Fast Ethernet NICs continued to be the most popular choice, representing 79 per cent of overall NIC shipments, up from 74 per cent in the second quarter of the year.
