Lucent readying Cajun switch

Lucent Technologies early next month will announce an addition to its Cajun campus switch line that will boost network density and bandwidth in enterprise networks and enable deployment of voice and video applications.

In addition, an enterprise version of the company's Softswitch routing technology is planned.

Lucent's upcoming Cajun switch will support next-generation network functionality, particularly aiding in the deployment of data, voice, and video applications, according to officials at Lucent. The switch will also offer investment protection for existing data networking infrastructures.

The Cajun line addition is targeted at the high-end needs of enterprises but could also be deployed by small Internet service providers (ISP), company officials said.

The switch shares a common architecture with the other products in the Cajun line, but builds up the internal bandwidth capacity of the switching core to offer high-end functionality.

With networking vendors such as Cisco assembling advanced product lines from a variety of acquisitions, Lucent is betting on the virtue of a common and complementary architecture. According to one analyst, a common hardware architecture is important, but factors such as software may be key.

"A consistent hardware platform might buy you an advantage for a fixed window of time, but it is far more important that the software be compatible," said analyst Dave Passmore, research director at NetReference in Virginia.

Lucent also plans next year to target the enterprise with a scaled-down version of its Softswitch software-based routing technology, currently aimed at the service provider market. Softswitch is an enabling technology that provides IP-based services with the same quality as services on traditional circuit-switched networks. For example, if service over IP has congestion, Softswitch will throw calls back into the circuit-switched world without an interruption of service.
