Silver Peak ships first multi-gigabit WAN optimisation appliance for next-generation data centres

SYDNEY, June 7, 2011. Silver Peak Systems today extended its data centre class wide area network (WAN) optimisation leadership with the release of the new NX-10000 (NX-10K) appliance.

The Silver Peak NX-10K is the industry’s first multi-gigabit-per-second (Gbps) WAN optimisation appliance built for next-generation data centres supporting cloud and virtualisation architectures.

The NX-10K is the latest addition to Silver Peak’s full range of physical and virtual WAN optimisation appliances, all of which provide the most-scalable and cost-effective WAN optimisation for data centre and branch office deployments. The new Silver Peak NX-10K appliance delivers three-times more capacity and throughput performance than its nearest competitor.

The growing adoption of virtualisation and cloud computing combined with more applications converging in the data centre is driving IT leaders to re-architect the data centre. The evolving requirements of these new data centres, which are evident now in Silver Peak’s larger customer deployments, include standardising on larger capacity WANs and 10 Gbps local area network (LAN) infrastructures to support data and application mobility, collaboration, and availability across distributed environments.

The Silver Peak NX-10K helps customers to ‘future-proof’ the data centre for these emerging deployments with four 10 Gbps interfaces, 2.5 Gbps of WAN throughput, and optimisation for all internet protocol (IP) traffic and applications in a single appliance. This enables customers to simplify their network deployments and reduce costs by deploying fewer appliances in the data centre while also allowing them to add more applications over the WAN. Whether it is deployed between data centres, or between data centres and multiple branch offices, the NX-10K provides the same performance and features.

Data centre class WAN optimisation

With a two-rack-unit (2U) form-factor, the NX-10K is highest capacity WAN optimisation appliance with the smallest footprint, which saves space and minimises cooling and power in the data centre. The appliance supports 2.5 Gbps of WAN bandwidth with 256,000 simultaneous sessions—the largest capacity of any WAN optimisation appliance.

The NX-10K appliance includes a 1.6 terabyte resilient local data store using solid state drives (SSDs), and includes four 10 Gbps Ethernet interfaces to simplify networking deployments in data centres configured for 10 Gbps connectivity.

The Silver Peak NX-10K appliance uses the same network optimisation techniques as the entire family of Silver Peak NX physical appliances, and VX and VRX virtual appliances. This gives customers the most comprehensive set of options for optimising a distributed environment, and ensures consistent features and performance from the smallest branch office to the largest data centre.

Silver Peak’s unique features optimise all IP traffic and applications over the WAN:

• Network Acceleration: Overcomes WAN latency and mitigates the impact of latency across the WAN by using protocol acceleration techniques, including the adjustment of TCP window sizes, selective TCP acknowledgements, and CIFS read-ahead and write-behinds. These tools help to overcome protocol chattiness that can otherwise prevent applications from working properly over long distances.

• Network Integrity: Corrects packet delivery issues common with cloud and MPLS technologies, using adaptive Forward Error Correction (FEC) and Packet Order Correction (POC) technology to rebuild lost and out-of-order packets in real-time. Advanced quality of service (QoS) techniques prioritise traffic, while granular traffic shaping policies to guarantee network resources.

• Network Memory: Works to maximise WAN bandwidth utilization. Silver Peak’s patented solution for disk-based WAN deduplication maximises available WAN bandwidth across an enterprise. Network Memory inspects all traffic at the byte level and stores copies of content in high-capacity disk drives and SSDs. Advanced finger-printing techniques recognize repetitive patterns for local delivery, eliminating the transfer of duplicate data across the WAN
