Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Streamlines Purchasing and Distribution with Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne
Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory implemented Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne as the foundation for a company transformation to streamline manufacturing and distribution to the company’s domestic and export customers. The organisation employed Oracle User Productivity Kit to assist with the change management to the 120 staff using the system.
Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Company Holdings Limited (WCB) is an Australian-owned manufacturer of high quality dairy products for the domestic and export markets. WCB also produces fresh milk under the Sungold brand and supplements under the Enprocal and Pro10Active brands.
Prior to the implementation, WCB were running a 15-year-old JD Edwards application that did not meet the company’s complete needs. For example, the purchasing of ingredients, packaging, freight, and distribution services was completed using manual or electronic order books, spreadsheets, or simply done over the phone. This made it difficult to create timely and accurate snapshots of creditor and inventory information.
As part of a five-year strategic plan to modernise its business systems, WCB chose to migrate to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Financial Management, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Sales Order Management, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Procurement and Subcontract Management and JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Manufacturing and Engineering.
A key consideration for WCB’s selection of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne was its relative ease of integration to both Oracle and non-Oracle technology.
The solution has automated WCB’s production, sales, and distribution processes and enabled the company to better control spending. The deployment of Oracle User Productivity Kit has been a significant help in streamlining the training of current and new employees.
Oracle User Productivity Kit provides WCB staff members the ability to learn at their own pace in a ‘just in time’ fashion through 70 on-line lessons developed by WCB for staff training. This helps provide an instant knowledge base for existing and new staff and reduces the need for classroom-based training sessions, or the need to overly rely on the ‘institutional memory’ of more experienced staff.
WCB is presently analyzing its gross profit margins (by customer and product) by taking data from the JD Edwards platform and feeding it into a pilot business intelligence system. The company also plans to use this data to analyze its freight and distribution arrangements to keep these costs under control.
The upgrade commenced in July 2008 and was live in March 2009.
Supporting Quotes
“WCB had been using the JD Edwards platform for 15 years and had developed a lot of knowledge during that time. This made it easier to make the transition to the most current version. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications have provided the foundation for a range of projects that will transform the way WCB operates now and in the future,” said Ian Spencer, Project Manager, ICT, Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. “It will ensure that we can continually streamline manufacturing and distribution tasks to provide a better service to our domestic and export customers.”
“JD Edwards EnterpriseOne is well suited to the needs of Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory as the solution offers functionality specific to the food and beverage industry but at a total cost of ownership appropriate for an organisation the size of WCB. What’s more, as the business grows, Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne can grow along with it,” said John Smith, General Manager, Applications, Commercial and Channels Oracle ANZ.
