Fraudsters provide false 'security' for Facebook users

Symantec observes phishing website that targets Facebook login credentials

Symantec recently observed a phishing website that targets Facebook login credentials, claiming to provide security to Facebook users. The phishing site is titled as a “Security and Privacy Update” website. The page does not imitate the legitimate Facebook website and appears to be an alternate website providing this facility. It states that Facebook users are vulnerable to threats including spam messages and hacking attacks that can compromise their user profiles. The page further states that if users confirmed their identity by providing login details, they would then be safe from such threats.

Hosted by a free web hosting site, the words used in the phishing URL also give the impression that the website is related to a security update.

Symantec advises internet users are advised to follow best practices to avoid phishing attacks. Below are some basic tips for avoiding online scams:

* Do not click on suspicious links in email messages.

* Check the URL of the website and make sure that it belongs to the brand.

* Type the domain name of your brand’s website directly into your browser’s address bar rather than following any link.

* Frequently update your security software, such as Norton Internet Security 2010, which protects you from online phishing.
