Tandberg Data increases RDX cartridge capacity to 1TB
SYDNEY, 23 July, 2010. Tandberg Data, the global supplier of data protection solutions, today announced the introduction of the 1TB RDX cartridge, for use with the Tandberg Data RDX QuikStor.
The new 1TB cartridge is the highest capacity RDX cartridge on the market, with Tandberg Data also offering customers a variety of RDX cartridge capacities, including 160GB, 320GB, 500GB and 640GB.
The 1TB RDX cartridge will allow users to back up their entire server onto a single cartridge, ensuring that their data is fully protected for instant availability or offsite safekeeping.
RDX QuikStor is a disk-based removable storage system with portable cartridges that offers rugged, reliable and convenient backup, ideal for the SMB market. It combines the benefits of tape – reliability, portability, archive life and low cost – with the performance, speed, random access and ease of use of hard disk technology.
“Tandberg Data continues to advance its RDX removable disk technology to addresses the burgeoning data storage needs of small and mid-sized customers who need reliable, cost-effective storage," said Robert Amatruda, research director for Data Protection and Recovery at IDC. "The growing number of top-tier OEMs and resellers offering RDX removable disk technology is a strong indication of its market dominance.”
“The 1TB RDX cartridge, used in conjunction with Tandberg Data’s powerful backup and deduplication software, AccuGuard, with a typical 20:1 deduplication ratio, allows users to back up 20TB of raw data on a single pocket-size cartridge,” said Marije Stijnen, vice president of marketing for Tandberg Data. “At that capacity point, RDX technology beats all other backup methods in its class as a safe and economical data protection solution for users who want to secure their important files.”
Tandberg Data is the leading worldwide provider of RDX removable storage systems having shipped more than 180,000 RDX QuikStor drives and more than 560,000 RDX cartridges worldwide in three years.
RDX AccuGuard Deduplication Software
A copy of RDX AccuGuard software is bundled with select RDX QuikStor drives, providing customers with simple, “always on” protection and a complete backup of all system and application data. Tandberg Data’s AccuGuard software increases effective backup storage capacity and decreases the backup windows leading to hard dollar savings. Using source-based deduplication – deduplication of data by identifying and removing redundant data prior to storage - optimizes bandwidth, allowing daily backups to run as much as 20 times more efficiently. AccuGuard’s flexible file searching, drag-and-drop or right-click restore, and point-in-time disaster recovery assures users of easy, effective data retrieval.
In addition to RDX AccuGuard, RDX QuikStor is compatible with most popular backup software, including EMC Retrospect, Symantec Backup Exec, Yosemite Backup, CommVault Galaxy and CA ARCserve software. All RDX QuikStor cartridges are removable for off-site storage, disaster recovery and archival applications, and are built to last more than 10 years with normal use. All future RDX cartridges will work in today’s QuikStor systems, providing long-term investment protection.
Pricing and Availability
The 1TB RDX QuikStor cartridge will be available in August 2010 through Tandberg Data’s established channel of distributor and reseller partners. The manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) of the 1TB RDX QuikStor cartridge is $US485. The RDX QuikStor and RDX media ship with a three-year warranty.

Spectra Logic and Australian National University Success Story - March 2012
Australian National University (ANU) located in Canberra, and ranked as one of the top universities in Australia, recently deployed two Spectra Logic T950 enterprise tape libraries at the heart of its 9.5 petabyte tape-based active archive to support ANU’s high performance private data cloud storage solution. The cloud-based storage installation with Spectra’s tape-based active archive allows ANU to efficiently support its exponential data growth, accelerate access to its research data, and improve overall data reliability.
Market Potential-Strategy Guide to the Active Archive Market
The active archive market is a growing segment where tape is seen as part of a disk or network fileystem. This means that to an end user disk and tape are “blended” and whether file is held on disk or tape is “invisible” to the end user. The active archive market is the fastest growing space in the storage industry and allows direct end user access to tape through a file system front end.
