The 8th of August marked the end of life for PHP 4, which has been in stable release since May, 2000. With no further security patches to come for the technology, what options are there for those who can't or won't upgrade?

Who's Afraid of the Big .NET? 05 August, 2008 10:05:13

The road to digital nirvana is littered with the remains of much larger companies Redmond has digested or destroyed
You may have noticed this has been a slow week in Cringeville. Well now the truth can be told. For the past five days I've been held captive in Amsterdam by a small group of mad Dutchmen. They locked me in the tower of a Swiss hotel, trundled me into a van with three other captives, drove us around the Dutch countryside until we were disoriented, and forced us to consume vast quantities of rich foods delivered in thimble-sized portions accompanied by heroic volumes of tangy Teutonic wine. It was Hell.

Microsoft, it's time to officially rescind the Linux lawsuit threats 31 July, 2008 10:12:34

Microsoft should really come clean with a statement that rescinds its Linux/patent/suing threat altogether
At this point in the game, Microsoft should really come clean with a statement that rescinds its Linux/patent/suing threat altogether. Granted, Microsoft put itself in a hard spot with this one, since it had its channel singing the same tune for those murky months after the threat. If it stands up says, "Sorry, just kidding!" that won't make the channel partners happy, particularly if they used the threat to convince customers they must buy SUSE or Windows over Red Hat and other distros. But the fact is, we are seeing actions by Microsoft that indicate that the "suing Linux users" jig is up.

Focus on restore, not backup 18 July, 2008 08:59:38

Better ways to protect your data.
Everyone always worries about backup, backup, backup. Guess what? None of your users, or managers for that matter, care one bit about backup. All they want is restore, and they want it immediately. So shift your focus from backup to restore.

Why Google has lost its mojo 08 July, 2008 12:02:58

Google has become just another fat, happy, and even arrogant company. And that's good news for Microsoft.
Google went from startup to behemoth in record time. But there are increasing signs that Google has become just another fat, happy, and even arrogant company, no longer the lean, industry-changing giant of the past. And that spells good news for Microsoft.

Bad blood over Linspire's sale to Xandros 07 July, 2008 08:53:31

Linspire's former CEO, Kevin Carmony, isn't holding back in his criticism of the sale.
One of the first commercial Linux distributions aimed at the average computer user, Linspire, has just been sold to Xandros and undergone a name change to Digital Cornerstone. Xandros may not be very commonly known, but it is the distro being used by Asus on the EeePC.

    A farewell to arms 02 July, 2008 12:49:30

Bill Gates will no doubt miss Microsoft’s industry battles but has plenty to keep him occupied
On the face of it, Microsoft without Bill Gates seems a bit like The Simpsons without Homer. This isn't meant to be a cruel comparison; my point is simply that the two 'people' are largely synonymous with the vehicle of their fame.

    Don't believe the Windows 7 hype 01 July, 2008 14:12:58

Five reasons not to get too excited by version 7
That the PR hordes at Microsoft would begin the jungle drumbeat for the next version of Windows within an ace of the launch of Vista was, of course, to be expected. The company's default position whenever challenged about its latest products has always been to pique the appetite for the next version through calculated leaks, the drawing up of roadmaps, the tossing around of code names and the issuing of possible feature details. This predictable tactic is rearing its head again with a steady stream of stories appearing in the media: Google News today lists 862. The question is: why do we play along?
