Competitive landscape

VMware has a significant lead in the virtualisation market today but Citrix and Microsoft are leading the charge as far as closing that gap is concerned. So what did our industry panel think about the competitive landscape? Here are some of their thoughts:

"Microsoft was once a different second to Netscape. VMware can't afford to get arrogant" Leading Solutions' Roy Pater

"Citrix has an interesting VDI story in conjunction with Presentation Server and application delivery" The Missing Link's Jason Arnold-Auland

"The hypervisor will become an absolute commodity during the next 2-3 years. The value is in the management" IBM's Peter Hedges

"We decide on the best technology but, when it comes to the decision-makers, proliferation might decide what's good enough" Oriel Technologies' Rodney Haywood

"We welcome competition because it brings credibility to the market. I worked for Novell so I've been there" VMware's David Blackman

"Server virtualisation is a business discussion but virtual desktop is still a technical discussion. I think the next wave will actually be storage virtualisation" Artis Group's Chris Caswell

"There's more to virtualisation than VMware. That drives it but you end up virtualising disk, I/O and the desktop" Technical Architecture Solutions Tony Wilkinson
