Commander has landed a deal with contact centre outsourcer, PCI, to fit out the organisation with Nortel equipment.

The deal is currently worth more than $750,000, and that figure will rise over the life of the contract, according to Commander group segment manager, Liam Fraser.

"It's truly one of the more sizable and significant deals due to its complexity and the innovation in the solution itself," he said. "It's a high profile win for us."

PCI previously had an old digital-based Nortel PABX solution.

"They've been a long-time user of Nortel technology and we brought them into the latest generation and have given them a platform to grow well into the future as well," Fraser said. "PCI was growing significantly and were moving from one office location to another to accommodate the growth in their business. We went through an entire technology refresh processes with them."

Commander upgraded the customer's platform to an IP telephony solution based on Nortel's communication server 1000E IP PBX, which is supported by an Ethernet Routing Switching (ERS) network. The implementation also includes a multimedia WLAN 2300 solution, Nortel's Call Pilot unified messaging and Communication Control Toolkit.

"It's got real-time and redundancy built into the IPBX solution itself. It's massively scalable in terms of the amount of users that it can accommodate," Fraser said. "It's a quite complex design and it's geared around high availability. PCI's biggest thing is servicing customers and they can't be offline for their voice or data."

PCI general manager of integration, Jason May, said it had been using Nortel products for several years and thought Commander was best suited to conduct the implementation.

"We did look at other vendors, but we had a pretty good track record with Nortel and internal knowledge on their platforms," he said.

In February this year Commander secured a $7 million deal with Nortel to upgrade Melbourne's RMIT university.
