Westan Pty Ltd Samsung Electronics partner in Australia today announced the entry into mobile Hard Disk Drive (HDD) market with its first “SpinPoint M” series products. Samsung’s entry into the fastest growing market segment will be a welcome news to the mobile computer manufacturers who are recently mired in a shortage of 2.5 inch HDDs. Designed mainly for today’s mainstream and high-end notebook PCs, the “SpinPoint M “ series offers capacities ranging from 30GB up to 80GB. It also features 8MB of onboard data cache and high performance 5400rpm spin speed.

Mr. Tae-Jik Lee, V.P. of Strategic Marketing, Storage System Division at Samsung Electronics, comments: “As with growing momentum seen in the mobile computer market, Samsung has worked diligently to diversify its product line-up in order to gain market opportunity seen in this market. With the addition of this new line-up to our product family, we are making another step forward to our ultimate goal of being an industry leader, determined to serve existing and future customers better. Currently, to ensure a smooth adoption of our new mobile products into notebook PC systems, we are working closely with OEM companies.” Product Key Features

Taking the full advantage of 5400rpm spin speed and 8MB buffer space, “SpinPoint M“ series mobile drives are designed to offer outstanding throughput performance while maintaining power consumption competitive to equivalent products existing today in the industry.

One of the other outstanding features of “SpinPoint M” series is its acoustic quality. Samsung invented a revolutionary new latch mechanism that not only eliminates the unpleasant rattling noise of the traditional 2.5inch drives but also significantly reduces the clicking noise generated when a drive moves its heads on and off the disk according to the operating modes. The drive uses Fluid Dynamic Bearing motor to achieve industry leading operating acoustic noise level.

“SpinPoint M “is also designed with reliability improvement in mind, advanced mechanical platform and the robust cover design are engineered to minimize the intensity of external shock transmitted to the most critical components of the drive providing industry leading shock protection capability.

Samsung applied six sigma processes in both product development and manufacturing engineering stages to efficiently enhance the reliability of this new product. The outstanding features of “SpinPoint M” are the results of successful deployment of six sigma processes.
