What is the next big thing in the industry?
One of the key areas is wireless broadband Internet. Connectivity everywhere at broadband speeds is going to be huge, as well as handheld mobile Internet devices.
What's the main focus for Intel this year?
The main focus for us is 45nm, which is ramping up top to bottom. Our first quad-core product, the 65nm, has been a hugely successful product, and will continue to be successful until we get 45nm supply fully in place.
We plan to transition across our channel in late Q2 - Australia is a mature market and we've got the ability to take a newer technology and transition it faster than most other countries.
What do you do when you're not at work?
I'm a mad Collingwood supporter, I ride my bike, and I go to the gym. Because I travel for work and spend a lot of time away I just like to stay at home and get back to my roots, do the gardening and spend time with friends and family.
Do you attend many Collingwood matches during the season?
I try and go to every match I can and I'm a member of the club. I'll go to the footy with a group of friends, and we'll go to a restaurant afterwards and have a beer. I'm a Melbourne boy, born and bred, so footy is important.
What are some of your favourite gadgets?
I love my PC. I also like the [Nintendo] Wii - I think it is a concept that is going to have a big impact on the PC, and 10 years from now we won't have a keyboard and mouse. I don't see why I should have to come home and turn on my PC and notebook and download content: why can't all this stuff happen automatically?
I see us getting to the point where you can go home and your PC will know what your favourite show is, and when that show is on. It will know when you like your heater or electric blanket turned on, and when you want your coffee in the morning. I got a coffee machine for Christmas, and I have to get up half an hour earlier in the morning now to make a cup.
Home automation is on the way. At the moment it's fragmented - you've got to go to different companies and there's different standards for everything - but I think it will start to come together soon.
What did you want to be when you were younger?
I wanted to play professional football (soccer). I played regular club football for the local Victorian league, which wasn't professional, until the age of 18. Then I realised that there were nightclubs, and other things in life, and the soccer training went from being a priority to not being one at all.
What is your biggest ambition?
From a professional standpoint I'd love to run Intel, but you've got to be realistic and have balance in life, so my overall ambition is to be healthy and live long, have a family, and be successful professionally.
