Tegatech broadens UMPC portfolio with Gigabyte
New range of UMPCs to appeal to younger enthusiasts

Niche mobile device distributor, Tegatech, has brought another UMPC brand into its portfolio after signing with Taiwanese manufacturer, Gigabyte.

Tegatech principal, Hugo Ortega, said the vendor has had a presence in Australia around its range of components, such as motherboards, but limited representation for its UMPC range to date.

"The Gigabyte range sits well in our portfolio, with good specifications and competitive price points, and has street appeal with younger groups who are familiar with Gigabyte's other devices," he said.

Although the UMPC market was still niche, occupying less than five per cent of the global notebook turnover, Ortega claimed new market segments were opening to the technology.

"We're seeing impressive adoption in home inspection and real estate market segments, and more generally with mobile professionals who need better featured equipment than PDAs," he said.

Tegatech has grown its reseller base by 25 per cent over the last year and expects to reach 1000 active resellers by the end of the calendar year.

Gigabyte spokesperson, Rensia Lin, said that although UMPCs were a new product range, Australia has always been a strong market for the vendor.

"We actively support our distributors with promotion and training. It is critical in Australia to compete aggressively," Lin said.
