6 annoying things (and 3 great ones) about Asus' ultraportableLike many gearheads, I've owned a lot of portable computers over the years -- and I've wanted to replace every last one with a smaller, sleeker upgrade, from the "luggable" Apple IIc onward. But most of those upgrades have left me disappointed: with the lack of software; with cheap, hard-to-use interfaces; and with "optional" add-ons that were in fact very much necessary to make the machine useful.

Fuji Xerox WorkCenter C2424
Designed for small office or workgroup environments, this colour multifunction printer, scanner and copier is based on solid, polymer-based ink instead of powdered toner. This has benefits such as energy efficiency, enhanced print quality and vibrant, true colours. The C2424 offers first-page-out speed at six seconds and prints up to 24 pages per minute (ppm). Standard features include automatic two-sided printing, collation and scan to server (with high security internal hard disk drive) and scan to PC. Most features can be used on the control panel or via the user friendly and intuitive graphical driver interface. It can manage multiple tasks and has security features that enable save-secureproof printing, and control access to scanned documents. Aimed at medium to large workgroups or small business users, this MFP comes with 256MB RAM standard memory (768MB RAM max). Offering 26ppm colour and 32ppm mono, PCL and Postscript printing, paper capacity up to 930 sheets, a 60,000 page monthly duty cycle, it can also print on a range of media from business cards to 1.2m banners. ProQ2400 multi-level technology combined with high definition toner delivers enhanced print quality, while inbox software simplifies in-house printing and helps manage print resources. Bundled software includes Web Print which ensures Web pages are printed correctly; Photo Enhance which allows photo-like quality printing on ordinary office paper; and Template Manager which aids design and printing. HP Colour LaserJet CM1015/1017
With integrated copying and scanning functionality, HP's new MFP series is ideal for small work-teams. It prints in colour and monochrome at 8ppm and features an easy-to-use control panel with 2.4-inch colour graphical display (on the CM1017 model) and a two-line monochrome LCD panel (on the CM1015 model). The series requires four consumables, making it easy to use and maintain. The HP ColorSphere toner included has enhanced melting and fusing features, enabling optimum toner release and better flow onto the page for more consistent colour, higher resolution and a 40 per cent increase in gloss levels. It also features a photo memory card slot, and allows users to send scanned documents (such as manuals and reports) directly to the desktop or an email address.
