Making solutions sing

Ingram Micro's Stuart Ellis talks about playing the right tune in business and kicking a goal
Nadia Cameron 19 March, 2008 16:18:40

Where did you play music?

I've played at most venues in Sydney in one shape or form. I was heavily involved in the music industry and working with other bands.

Do you have any music career highlights?

I did shows with Andy Gibb, Skyhooks, Billy Thorpe, The Pointer Sisters - it's always a buzz to meet people like that and do gigs with them. But when you think about making a career out of it, I think AC/DC got it right - it's a long way to the 'shop'. But I do have a diverse interest in music.

Do you still pick up the sticks?

Not these days with my professional career and my family. I used to bring my gear to work and head off to a gig on Friday nights. It's a crazy lifestyle. You take it in your stride when you're in the middle of it though.

What's your main focus this year?

At Ingram generally, it's about customer service and engendering ease of business. Across the Solutions Group, it's about execution. We have gleaned a strong and compelling product portfolio and invested heavily in pre-sales technical and business development, configure to order, and bringing in specialisations around that portfolio. Our challenge is to execute.

What will be the next big thing in the industry?

Over the next five years, I see environmental issues and the industry developing an environmental conscience. Legislation is going to drive this with things like carbon taxes. This will further fuel virtualisation, re-tooling of the datacentre, the consumption of power, cooling and infrastructure - all of those burgeoning technologies and issues around technology.

What do you do when you're not at work?

I have three daughters, two at university. I'm a netball dad in the winter and I'm doing a couple of degrees by osmosis - one in sports management and the other in education - with the girls.

What's your biggest ambition?

Professionally, I'd like to get this solutions piece at Ingram through the roof. Personally, it's the well being and happiness of my wife and girls.
