iPhone in Australia? Not yet, despite rumours
Apple resellers have not been briefed on the iPhone release in Australia, contary to online spectulation
Matthew Sainsbury 10 April, 2008 17:09:17

Several major Apple resellers have dismissed online rumours which claimed the vendor's popular iPhone could reach Australian users by the end of June.

According to a report on MacTalk forum, the iPhone will be released in the last week of June, be supported by more than one carrier partners, and will be available without contract lock-in. In the US, Apple's exclusive iPhone carrier partner is AT&T.

The forum also claimed Apple had informed local resellers of its iPhone strategy.

Apple resellers have dismissed the rumour as bogus and pointed out Apple is notoriously tight-lipped with what information it gives to its channel.

Next Byte joint managing director, Tim Kleeman, said the speculation flew against the manner in which Apple typically handled product releases, which were carefully orchestrated so as not to diminish the impact when Apple officially launches information.

"Apple Australia has not released its go-to-market strategy, in terms of timing or methodology. We've seen the recent speculation online and we regard it as just that," he said.

Academy Store managing director, Ben Morgan, said he also hadn't heard anything from Apple Australia about the iPhone's release

"I wish it were true, but I've not been briefed by Apple Australia, and until I've been directly briefed by Apple I'm led to believe these are just rumours," he said.
