Telstra (ASX:TLS) today unveiled a new service that will allow its customers to find the location of mobile phone users in near-real time.
The "WhereIs Everyone" service will allow subscribers to pinpoint the locations of other Telstra users, which can then be displayed on a WhereIs map.
The service is available exclusively to Telstra customers, and will be opt-in only, meaning users will be unable to track those who haven't signed up.
The user being tracked will not be made aware of any WhereIs requests made.
Users will also be able to order a location alert for a selected time, which will be sent via SMS. Parents will, for example, be able to set up location alerts to be sent shortly after school concludes every week day.
"Whereis Everyone" will be free to join, and each 'look-up' will cost 50 cents. Users will also be able to subscribe to the service for $2.95 a month and receive unlimited use of the service.
Each location alert message will cost 30 cents.
