Telstra has completed a rollout that will enable ADSL2+ broadband services to an additional 2.4 million businesses and homes across the country.
The rollout, which involved the upgrading of 907 exchanges, was completed in just over two months. Almost two million of the areas serviced are in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
"With around 80 per cent of the exchanges located outside the major metro areas, this is an important step forward for telecommunications in regional and rural Australia," said Telstra's head of Public Policy & Communications, Phil Burgess in a statement.
According to Telstra over 1400 exchanges in its BigPond network, serving 16.6 million people, have now been upgraded to deliver ADSL 2+ services.
As an indication of the scope of the rollout, the now new OPEL broadband network was to have only delivered ADSL2+ equipment in 312 telephone exchanges.
