Bridging connectivity gaps 03 June, 2005 10:31:05
IT infrastructure requirements can shift quite suddenly. Say, for example, your company lands several large new accounts at the same time. The sudden influx of sales and account management staff so quickly outstrips your office's square footage that the only reasonable thing to do in the time available is to look for additional space. That space turns out to be a mile or so down the street. As an IT administrator, you need to get the new location connected to the network as soon as possible.

It provides enhanced security with mobility and scalability. The WS5100 simplifies day-to-day operations with unified management of hardware, software configuration and network policies. Centralised management also enables the automatic distribution of configurations to all access ports. The WS5100 supports a heterogeneous device environment and provides the wireless infrastructure needed to support higher data throughput and additional mobile workers, the company said. The product is distributed by Warp Systems.
RRP: The WS5100 is available from $3069 for a six-port switch, scalable in additional six-port allotments up until a 48-port option costing $18,834.
3Com WLAN bridge
The 3Com Wireless 11g 54Mbps Building-to-Building Bridge lets users replace lower-bandwidth T1 lines and cable connections with high-bandwidth wireless building-to-building links. Connection is possible at distances up to 16.9km, depending on the antenna selected, according to the company. The wireless Ethernet bridge lets users start with point-to-point, then advance to point-to-multipoint as growth and applications demand-all with an antenna change. The bridge works with any other Wi-Fi certified access points in large multi-vendor environments. The product is distributed by Ingram Micro and LAN Systems.
RRP: $998
Cisco Aironet
Cisco Aironet 1130AG Series IEEE 802.11a/b/g access points provide high-capacity, high-security, enterprise-class features, according to the company. Hardware-assisted Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) or temporal key integrity protocol (TKIP) encryption provides support for interoperable IEEE 802.11i, Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) or WPA security. The 1130AG Series also incorporates Cisco Aironet radio technology. Two radios provide simultaneous support for 802.11a and 802.11g standards, delivering 108Mbps data rates in the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands. It avoids interference in congested airspace, simplifying the deployment of high-capacity networks. For smooth migration, the 1130AG Series takes advantage of the dual-band capabilities of today's WLAN clients, while providing full backward compatibility for legacy 802.11b clients. The product is distributed by Express Data and LAN Systems.
RRP: $1279
