Setting an example

When Queensland announced its QP707 whole of government IT procurement plan, environmental concerns were front and centre. That was music to the ears for leading integrator, Data#3, which developed a detailed strategy to help state agencies meet stringent requirements.

Prior to QP707, Queensland Government agencies had 29 individual standing offer arrangements (SOAs). Different agencies had varying levels of purchasing power and understanding of IT. Data#3 had worked with Queensland Health, various councils and shared information services.

"Apart from providing a full range of pricing, QP707 also means there is a central focus now that can update them all as a team as opposed to treating them as individual agencies," Conroy said.

Apart from the procurement and supply of products, Data#3 has invested heavily in a large distribution and configurations centre in Brisbane. This will feature all of the latest technology as well as provide asset tagging and shipment services.

"We have an area of our distribution centre that does run-ups so that a desktop or laptop gets shipped out ready to go," Phillips said. "Previously there were a lot of physical resources tied up with imaging a desktop or a laptop in a customer environment. We have now taken that away and we can do it much more effectively and efficiently."

He praised Queensland Government for showing leadership in the community by issuing a tender that was so environmentally tight. As environmental concerns become increasingly important to business, companies will likely be expected to follow this example in the near future.

"Having information at your disposal about how you are managing energy efficiency and disposing of equipment will become critical to effectively managing your carbon footprint," he said.
