3Com X-Family
The X-Family, which comprises the X5 and X506 products, is built on network-based intrusion prevention systems and offers integrated security including VPN, firewall, Web content filtering and traffic shaping. The products are designed as a managed solution specifically for SMBs that need enterprise-class security, combined with easy installation and use. Its integrated bandwidth management capabilities prioritise voice or video traffic, while throttling back non-essential traffic, such as peer-to-peer file sharing, to maximise network resources and reclaim bandwidth. With 18Mbps throughput, the X5 is targeted at single site businesses and branch offices with up to 100 employees. The X506 delivers 50Mbps of throughput and is aimed at medium enterprises and regional branch offices with over 100 employees. The X-Family unified security platform protects against worms, viruses, trojans, denial-of-service attacks, spyware, phishing, VoIP threats and other security issues.Distributed by LAN Systems.
RRP: X5 - from $1245; X506 - $4995

Exinda has added three new application acceleration appliances to its x800 product family. The vendor claims these will be easier to install and improve the performance of mission critical applications on corporate networks. The second-generation 2800, 4800 and 6800 appliances aim to solve performance problems by accelerating critical applications, eliminating redundant data and prioritising network traffic traversing the wide area network. New features include: auto discovery, a new hybrid caching capability, bi-directional application acceleration at up to 155Mbps (seven times faster than its previous TCP acceleration rates), and a new acceleration module for HTTP traffic. The auto discovery feature simplifies installation by eliminating time consuming, complex configurations, the vendor said. Network managers can simply plug in the intelligent appliance and all devices in the network auto discover each other. With hybrid WAN Memory, Exinda has doubled its caching capacity to improve application performance.Distributed by Techplus.

Review: Software push the WAN performance envelope 18 January, 2008 10:36:19
Version 1.0 of the software client brings huge performance gains to CIFS file transfers, though HTTPS and NFS are not supported; Version 4.1 of the site-to-site solution shows overall performance improvement over Version 3.0, while adding key features, including HTTPS supportI sometimes wonder why there aren't any movies made about IT superheroes. Sure, there's always Superman (able to leap tall buildings in a single bound) and Batman (the caped crusader), but what about WANman -- the IT superhero that accelerates high-latency traffic and saves the company from additional Internet bandwidth costs? Well, the tights and cape might not go over well (except on casual Fridays), but any IT staffer that can give enterprise users more performance is well on their way to superhero stardom. - +
