Toshiba Portege R500

Toshiba claims it has introduced the world's lightest and thinnest notebook in its class. The vendor also claims it is the first notebook to use transreflective LED backlight technology for enhanced screen visibility. With a 12.1-inch display, the R500 weighs less than 1kg and is just 19.5mm thick. Even at these dimensions, it includes a 7mm DVD Super Multi drive and standard 6-cell Lithium Ion battery. Toshiba also claims it is the world's first notebook to leverage a Solid State Drive (SSD) in place of a mechanical hard drive with 64GB of storage. SSD is a storage device that uses NAND flash memory instead of magnetic media in order to offer a number of benefits over standard mechanical hard drives. It involves no mechanical parts, which means it can withstand temperatures, vibrations and shocks more effectively; no latency times to seek or access the drive providing performance enhancements for boot up and accessing of fi les; and greater power efficiency because there are no moving parts. Toshiba also says it has a faster boot up and read/write speeds that will improve the user experience of Windows Vista. Thanks to High Density Mounting Technology, the vendor has been able to shrink the size of the notebook's motherboard by 35 per cent, innovate a super-thin LCD screen and 7mm DVD SuperMulti drive, and reduce the weight of the notebook hinges. This process allows technologies to be included in the Portege R500 without adding additional weight. It can run for 12.5 hours on a single battery charge, according to Toshiba, for enhanced productivity.
