Worldwide Gigabit Ethernet switch port shipments grew by almost a million ports in the third quarter of 2003, according to recent research from the Dell'Oro Group.
Shipments in copper-based Gigabit Ethernet ports helped the market as a whole grow 38 per cent from the second quarter of 2003, the research firm said.
Almost all the growth in the market was attributed to copper Gigabit shipments, as vendors push fixed-configuration and chassis switches with high densities of 10/100/1000M bps (bits per second) ports.
The increasing use of copper Gigabit Ethernet NICs in servers, and the beginnings of a desktop migration to 10/100/1000, are some factors in user demand for the switch ports.
According to Dell'oro, the top companies in the worldwide Gigabit Ethernet market last quarter, in order of most ports shipped, were: Cisco Systems, 3Com, HP, Nortel and Netgear, followed by Extreme Networks and Foundry Networks.
3Com was the fastest growing company in the market.
Its Gigabit Ethernet shipments grew 51 per cent from the second quarter to the third quarter.
